Hockey Goalie Sticks
As the player who defends his or her team’s goal, the ice hockey goalie needs special equipment that differs from those trying to do the opposite by putting the puck into the net. As a result of this, the team’s goalie uses specialized equipment to help him or her do this. This differing equipment is usually bigger and wider because of the padding that is needed to protect an ice hockey goalie’s body from power shots that might do some real harm otherwise.
Among the differences between ice hockey goalie equipment and that of the other players are the slightly modified goalie sticks. When compared with others, it is obvious that the goalie’s stick is wider, and has a smaller angle because he or she usually has no need to attempt to shoot the puck at the opposing goalie’s net. The blade has a slight curve in the direction of game play, but it is minimal because the goal is to stop pucks rather than to shoot them powerfully across the ice. Lastly, the shaft is wider in order to provide the ice hockey goalie with more surface to block with, and thus giving him or her a better chance to keep the opposing team’s goals out of his or her team’s net.
Like regular player sticks, hockey goalie sticks can be made of either wood or composite materials, and can come in many styles and lengths. Though traditional goalie sticks were made entirely of wood, many players today are opting for composite sticks, which are usually lighter and reinforced with materials like graphite or fiberglass to make them last longer. After all, as the only player in the game who might still have to play with a broken stick, an ice hockey goalie needs to know that he or she can depend on this most basic piece of equipment to be there when it is needed most.
They are offered in either one or two piece options, so that the goalie can customize his or her stick to better meet their needs. Many manufacturers also offer sticks that are injected with foam in order to make them lighter, or have rubber inserts specifically designed to minimize impact vibrations. With all of the options available for a goalie to choose from, it is recommended that he or she talk with their ice hockey coach or other hockey store professional in order to decide which option is best for them.
